Maria Martos – Executive Director / Founder of the Cancer Support and Education Program, Owner of Sagewood Wellness Center.
As a five-time cancer survivor, I have learned that while the ultimate outcome is not in our hands, doing everything in our power to fight the disease can greatly enhance our chances of overcoming it. My name is Maria Martos and I received my first cancer diagnosis when I was 27 years old. I was immediately engulfed with fear and anxiety that stayed with me throughout that first treatment. My family and friends were incredibly supportive but this didn’t help alleviate my fear. The second time around, I learned about a program which saved my life. We dove into complementary approaches and learned about mindfulness, nutrition, visualization, and the importance of social support to help manage the emotional stress and keep ourselves strong through arduous medical treatment. With each successive diagnosis, I learned new self-care approaches to complement my treatment.
I truly believe that I would not have made it through cancer five times if not for the self-care I implemented in my life. After my fifth bout with cancer, I realized that there was no one place for people diagnosed with this illness to learn these strategies and find a community of others who are undergoing similar experiences. I also realized that throughout the years, I had built into my support system a ready-made team of highly trained professionals who could partner with me in developing a program to fight cancer through complementary approaches that have so greatly helped me. From this partnership, CSEP was born. Our goal for CSEP is to help cancer patients find the best complements to their medical care that will fight cancer physically, mentally, spiritually, and with support. We hope that this will provide our participants with all they need to help to fight cancer, and give them their best hope for healing.
